Beeswax is a great additive in a homemade lotion recipe. It has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties that are great for sensitive skin. My children suffered from eczema when they were little and beeswax is great for soothing flaky skin.
Beeswax also locks in moisture which can help the skin to heal and decrease the risk of injury. It’s honestly one of my favorite additives in any DIY skincare I make. Be sure to try my DIY Lotion bar recipe. Lotion bars are a convenient way to keep your skin moisturized without the liquid mess of regular lotion .
I tend to have really dry hands in the winter months. Beeswax creates a protective layer on my skin to help soothe my skin. I keep a jar by sink in the kitchen and use it after I wash the dishes. Plus, I really enjoy making my own lotion from scratch especially an easy recipe like this one.
Shea Butter comes from the nuts of the Shea tree. It’s packed with vitamins and locks in moisture just like beeswax. I love shea butter because not only is it great for the skin, but it’s also not as greasy as other moisturizers.
Coconut oil serves a lot of purposes around our homestead. It’s great for high-heat cooking and it’s also perfect for the skin. It creates a creamy texture that melts when it’s combined with your body heat and allows the lotion to go on smoothly.
I choose to use organic coconut oil in my products. Fractionated coconut oils are more processed, but it doesn’t leave as much of a greasy texture. The choice of which kind of oil to use is up to you.
Other Natural Ingredients to Consider in Beeswax Lotion
While these ingredients are all you need to make a homemade beeswax lotion, there are other ingredients you could consider depending on your skin type and specific needs.
Jojoba oil
I always keep Jojoba on hand as a carrier oil. It’s perfect when you need to use essential oils over the surface of your skin. It also balances out skin that is prone to being oily while still maintaining moisture.
This oil is great for making natural oil cleansers. It removes dirt and makeup without overdrying the skin.
Vitamin E Oil
This is an antioxidant that fights free radicals while keeping your skin looking young and fresh. Be careful to keep it stored away from light. It’s great to add to any homemade skincare that is going in sensitive places like the face or armpits I love using it in homemade magnesium deodorant.
Olive Oil
I love adding olive oil to my homemade skin care to make it more of a liquid. It’s very nourishing for the skin and leaves it feeling soft and supple.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe has been used on burns for centuries because it soothes damaged skin and aids in skin healing. It makes a great addition to homemade skin care products if your skin is extra irritated and damaged.
Avocado Oil
This oil is rich in vitamins and fatty acids, making it super moisturizing and great for dry or irritated skin. Your skin also absorbs avocado oil really well which helps it to feel soft and nourished.
Soy Wax
If you don’t want to use beeswax, you can substitute soy wax as a vegan option in its place. It’s made from soybeans and has a lot of similar properties to beeswax which will give your lotion a nice texture.
Cocoa Butter
this ultra-hydrating butter not only helps to maintain the skin’s moisture, but it also smells great.
Mango Butter
This is another vegan option that would be a great substitute for beeswax in this recipe. It’s full of vitamins and antioxidants while also absorbing easily into the skin. Mango butter creates a non-greasy homemade lotion and is great to use in your skin care recipes.
Where does Beeswax come from?
When bees consume honey, special glands in their bodies produce wax flakes. They chew on the flakes and mix them with their salvia to make beeswax.
It’s similar to us using clay to build with, but bees use it to construct their hives.
They use beeswax to make the hexagonal cells you see in the honeycomb, where they store honey, raise their young, and store pollen.
How To Make Homemade Beeswax Lotion
Now that you have an idea of the main ingredients you’re going to use to make your homemade lotion, let’s talk about how to make it.
Supplies
- Glass bowl
- Saucepan
- Spatula
- 2-ounce amber jars with lids
- Large glass measuring cup with a handle
Ingredients
- ½ cup Beeswax pellets
- ¼ cup Pure shea butter
- ¼ cup Coconut oil
- 30 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)
- Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water. You’ll need a glass bowl that sits over the top of the water without it being in the water. The steam will heat the bowl causing your ingredients to melt without scorching. This is called a double boiler method.
- Add ½ cup of beeswax pellets into the glass bowl. **the ingredients will combine better if they are kept at room temperature.
- Heat the saucepan over low to medium heat and let the water start to simmer. As the water heats up, your ingredients will melt down into a liquid.
- Add ¼ cup Shea butter and ¼ cup Coconut oil to the bowl.
- Keep an eye on everything and give it an occasional stir to make sure it all combines and melts evenly.
- Once everything is melted into a smooth, creamy liquid, remove the bowl from the saucepan.
- If you’re adding essential oils for a little extra scent, stir them into the mixture after it cools to around 165 degrees F. If you add them while the wax is too hot, they can evaporate.
- Transfer the mixture to a large glass pitcher to make pouring easier. It’s best if you have one that is dedicated to making your beauty products.
- Pour your lotion into clean 2-ounce containers. Allow the mixture to cool completely prior to using it. This recipe makes around 4-5 ounces.
Use your new lotion on your hands, face, and any extra dry areas you have. You can even use it on your lips as a lip balm. It’s great for extra moisture.

If you choose to add essential oils to your lotion, the fragrance possibilities are endless. Here are a few of my favorite essential oils to add to my beauty recipes.

Hi, jumped online to find a lotion made with beeswax because I have two small bars to use up. Can you tell us where you source your shea butter from? In the past, purchased it on Amazon. This is the one ingredient I’m missing before I can make the lotion. Thanks.
