Pound cake is a classic Southern dish. It gets its name from the amount of ingredients in the original recipe. Traditionally it was made from one pound each of butter, flour, sugar, and eggs.
Today, there isn’t any shortage of recipe variations out there, but this simple brown sugar pound cake recipe is one of the best.
The recipe is adapted from my grandmother’s original recipe. She cooked everything low and slow. I’m sure that’s one of the reasons her food was so delicious.
I don’t have the time she had to savor the cooking process, but I love revamping her recipes to fit my schedule. One of my absolute favorite recipes is her Homemade Southern Pound Cake. It doesn’t last long in our house.

Recipe Tips
-Let all of your ingredients come to room temperature before mixing them. This will ensure they incorporate well.
–Pound Cake is a very dense cake. Be sure to check the center of the cake for doneness before removing it from the oven.
-This batter can be divided into two smaller loaf pans. Save one for yourself, and share one with a friend. You will decrease the cooking time to 1 hour if you are baking the cakes this way.
-This cake is delicious on its own, but adding maple glaze on top is amazing! Do this by combining:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 tablespoons of maple syrup.
Whisk the ingredients together until they are smooth. Drizzle over the top of the warm-pound cake.
