Do you love dry shampoo, but don’t like the toxic chemicals a lot of them contain? Do you also like the convenience of not washing your hair every day? Well this is the post for you. I’m going to tell you about my favorite non-toxic dry-shampoo recipe and my favorite store-bought brands.

Non-Toxic Dry Shampoo
I’ll be honest here, my hair doesn’t get washed as much as it should. Between four busy kids, a full-time job, a “sometimes” nurse job, and little farm chores, I’m a busy girl.
Discovering dry shampoo a few years back was life-changing. It could quite possibly be the single greatest concoction in our lifetime! There was a time in my life when I washed my oily-prone hair every single day.
After some hair training and a dry shampoo to-get-me-through motto, I now only have to wash a couple of times a week. This saves me so much time, and money on hair products. Not to mention, my hair is healthier from using less heat.
You can imagine my heart break after discovering that my beloved dry shampoo was full of toxic chemicals. At first I didn’t even care. I felt my benefits far outweighed my risk. The more I’ve learned about toxins over the years, the more weary I became.
So I set out to find a good dry shampoo with better ingredients. One that actually works. I even make my own non-toxic dry shampoo at home.
If you follow along with me, you know that I like to find my beauty products at brick and mortar stores in my area. Don’t get me wrong, I love amazon, but I like to lay eyes on my beauty products. However, a non-toxic dry shampoo is hard to find in local stores.
They’re out there, but you have to dig around for the good ones. I’m going to share one that I’ve found in local stores, and a few I’ve found online.
Why You’ll Love This Non-Toxic Dry Shampoo Recipe
Safe Ingredients: When you make it yourself, you know exactly what’s in it. No scary chemicals or stuff you can’t pronounce, just simple, natural ingredients!
Healthier for Your Hair: Store-bought dry shampoos sometimes have ingredients that can dry out your scalp and hair. A non-toxic homemade version is gentler, so your hair stays healthier.
Saves Money: It’s way cheaper than buying dry shampoo at the store! Most recipes use ingredients you probably already have at home, like cornstarch or cocoa powder.
Eco-Friendly: Many store-bought dry shampoos come in aerosol cans, which aren’t great for the environment. Your DIY version will be packaging-free (or you can store it in a reusable jar).
Customizable: You can tweak the recipe to match your hair color, add a scent you love, or make it as strong as you want. It’s completely yours!
No Build-Up: Some dry shampoos leave a weird residue that makes your hair feel gritty. Homemade versions are usually lighter and wash out easily.
Quick and Easy: It takes just a few minutes to make a batch, and it’ll last you a long time. So easy, you’ll wonder why you didn’t make it sooner!
Online Options
This is a great organic dry shampoo, and probably my favorite on the list! It absorbs a lot of oil and is available for dark hair. The dark hair powder is still a little light for my very dark brown hair.
I didn’t find the lighter color to be much of a problem after it’s worked in. It does contain baking soda which can be an irritant.
The only negative is the dispenser can dump out a large amount of product in a single area, so it takes a little practice to evenly distribute. Other than that, it’s a great option. You can find it here.
Primally Pure Dry Shampoo
This is another great option you can order directly from their site online. The ingredients are simple and clean. The product does contain baking soda which can cause irritation to some people. This dry shampoo absorbs fairly well, and the dispenser is similar to a salt-shaker so it deposits a minimal amount of product in an area.
I like this product for light days because it doesn’t over dry your hair. It is the most expensive brand I’m sharing, but I feel that the quality is worth the price. It’s also available for dark hair.
Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo (unscented)
I was hesitant to put this option on the list. While the ingredients aren’t awful, it contains isobutane as a propellent. However, it is a good option if you are in a pinch because it can be found at local stores like Wal-Mart and Target.
It does a great job absorbing oil. I’ve found that it definitely dries my hair out so I use it on my dirtiest of hair days. It also doesn’t distribute a lot of product in an isolated area due to it being an aerosol. Be sure to get the unscented dry shampoo!
Dry Shampoo DIY
I enjoy making my products at home whenever possible. Dry shampoo is surprisingly easy to make with a few simple ingredients.
- 8 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
- 4 teaspoons white kaolin clay
- 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder (optional for dark hair)
- 20-25 drops of essential oil (I like peppermint or rosemary)
Mix the dry ingredients together first. Add the essential oils after mixing. Store in a glass jar.
I have used a small canning jar, and poked holes in the lid to dispense. Now I use a glass spice jar. I feel it’s easier to dispense the right amount of product that way. This is a great option for days when you don’t need much product to freshen your hair up. Be careful if you are wearing your work clothes while applying.
The cocoa powder can leave dark brown spots on your clothing. Just ask me how I know. I also wouldn’t recommend using this mixture right before bed if you’ve included the cocoa powder. It can stain your pillow case. Otherwise, it’s cost effective and you know exactly what goes into it.
Non-Toxic Dry Shampoo Recipe and Store-Bought Options- Final Thoughts

DIY options let you customize your shampoo to your exact needs, while the store-bought brands that focus on safe ingredients make things super convenient. Either way, you can feel good about treating your hair (and yourself!) to a healthier, non-toxic routine. Happy hair days ahead!
