How To Make This Homemade Magnesium Lotion Recipe

What You’ll Need
½ Cup Magnesium Flakes– Magnesium chloride flakes are great for so many things in the body. One of the best benefits is it can decrease stress levels and help with getting a good night’s sleep. You can add the flakes to your warm bath water for added benefits.
¼ Cup Water- The water is used to help dissolve the flakes making for a creamier lotion. Distilled water will extend the shelf life of the lotion.
¼ cup Coconut oil– Coconut Oil is a great natural moisturizer for the skin. It also helps to protect the skin from outside irritants that you come in contact with daily.
3 tbsps Shea butter– Shea butter is easily absorbed into the skin but doesn’t make it oily. It’s great for adding an extra, nourishing moisturizer to your skin care product. It’s also great for all skin types.
2 tbsps Beeswax– Beeswax is very beneficial for the skin. It acts as an antiseptic that can help protect your skin from harmful bacteria. IIt also helpsto thicken the magnesium lotion which gives it a more creamy texture.
1 ml Vitamin E– Vitamin E has been shown to have anti-aging effects. That’s why it’s a popular ingredient in many anti-aging creams.
20 drops of Lavender essential oil– Lavender essential oil is known to have calming effects. It reduces anxiety and can help with a more restful night’s sleep. Adding lavender essential oil to the lotion enhances its calming properties.
Directions
- The first step is to heat a double boiler over low heat. You want the water to just be simmering. I use a large pot with a glass bowl for this. Be sure that the bowl does not touch the water, but sits above it instead.
- Combine ½ cup Magnesium flakes with ¼ cup of hot water in a small bowl. Allow the flakes to dissolve while you prepare the other ingredients.
- Once the water is simmering, add ¼ cup coconut oil, 3 tbsps shea butter, and 2 tbsps beeswax to the bowl. Stir continuously until everything melts together.
- Remove the bowl from the heat. Be sure to wear oven mitts because the bowl will be hot.
- Allow the mixture to cool slightly so that the liquid is warm, but not beginning to solidify.
- Stir in 1 ml of vitamin E oil and 20 drops of Lavender essential oil. If you add the oil while the mixture is too hot, it will evaporate.
- Stir in the magnesium water and use an immersion blender to whip the lotion into a creamy texture.
- Pour the liquid into glass containers. You can use mason jars for this. Allow it to cool and solidify.
- Store your lotion in a dark place to keep the oils from deteriorating.
Helpful Tips For Making A Magnesium Lotion Recipe
Use cold-pressed coconut oil when making lotions. Fractionated coconut oil will not firm like a cold-pressed will.
Be sure to let the mixture cool to room temperature before whipping it with the immersion blender. The lotion will not firm up as easily if it’s very warm.
If you want a runnier, more liquid texture omit the beeswax entirely. You can also decrease the amount of beeswax you use in the recipe to get your desired consistency.
Store your lotion in a warm place if It gets too cool if will be very firm and hard to use.
Use a separate immersion blender when you make skin care products. This will keep your ingredients from entering your food.
Be sure to use a pure essential oil when you’re making skin care products. Some oils can contain additives that aren’t good for the skin.

You can use hydroxide powder in different skin care recipes like a homemade deodorant. However, it’s not the best for this recipe. It’s great at protecting the skin and preventing moisture, but it doesn’t have the same soothing effect as the flakes. It will also change the consistency of the lotion.
Can I use magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) instead of magnesium chloride in this recipe?
No, magnesium sulfate wouldn’t work in this particular recipe. Magnesium flakes are best.
