Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 2 tbsp organic sugar or honey
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 3 1/2 cups organic flour

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stand mixer with a dough hook optional
  • Parchment Paper
  • Sheet pan

Method

  1. Begin by combining 1 cup warm water with 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) of yeast, and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Let the mixture bloom for around 5-7 minutes.
  3. Next, add 1 ½  tsp salt, 1 beaten egg, ¼ cup melted butter, and 3 ½ cups flour to the bowl.
  4. If you have a stand mixer with a dough hook, knead the mixture for around 4 minutes on medium speed. You can also knead the mixture by hand if you don’t have a dough hook.
  5. You want the dough to come together and pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. After kneading turn the dough out on a lightly floured surface, and shape it into a disc.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal parts. Shape each part into a ball. You can also shape it into more of a log if you are making hotdog buns.
  8. Place the dough balls onto a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  9. Cover it with a damp towel and allow it to rise for 10-30 minutes depending on the time you have.
  10. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400° F.
  11. Once the dough has risen, bake it in the oven for around 10 minutes or until the tops of the buns are golden.
  12. Brush the tops with melted butter. You can also add sesame or poppy seeds if you like.
  13. Slice the buns in half and serve them warm or toasted.

Helpful Tips

Let The Dough Rest If You Have Time

After adding all the ingredients together, let the dough rest for 10 minutes prior to kneading it. This isn’t an essential step and it’s one I often skip. However, it does make for a fluffier bun.

Letting It Rise For at Least 30 Minutes is Optimal

If you have time, let the buns rise for at least 30 minutes in a warm prior to baking. Again this isn’t an essential step. A 10 minute rise is also acceptable.

Make a Double Batch and Freeze the Buns

While you’re baking, make it a double. You can freeze the baked buns for later. When you need them, simply thaw them out and give them a light toast in the oven.
