What Is A Bath Bomb?
A bath bomb is a fizzy ball that you drop into your bath to make it more fun and relaxing. When it hits the water, it fizzes and dissolves, releasing nice scents and sometimes colors into the bath. They’re perfect for unwinding at the end of a long day.
The key ingredients in this essential oil bath bomb recipe are baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch. Baking soda and citric acid are what make it fizz, while cornstarch helps hold everything together.
You can also add your favorite essential oils and colors to make your bath bomb extra special.
These fizzy bath bombs are simple and fun to make. They’re great to put into a relaxing bath at the end of the day when you just want to pamper yourself. The lavender and lemon scent adds just a little bit of luxury to an ordinary bath.
Ingredients In These Simple Bath Bombs
Baking Soda
Baking Soda can be used for a lot of different things around the house, from baking and cleaning to skin care. It’s soothing for irritations, itching, and rashes, making it a great addition to your bath.
When you add baking soda to your bath water, it helps balance the pH of your skin, which can make it feel softer and smoother. Plus, it can help calm down any redness or any skin irritation you might have.
Citric acid
Citric acid is a natural ingredient found in fruits like lemons and limes. It’s great for your skin because it helps exfoliate, removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. This makes your skin look fresher and can prevent breakouts.
Citric acid also helps to even out your skin tone, reducing the appearance of dark spots. Plus, it helps your skin stay hydrated by attracting moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.
Cornstarch
Cornstarch is a fantastic ingredient for your skin! It’s rich in antioxidants, which help protect your skin from damage and keep it looking youthful.
Cornstarch can make your skin appear smooth and hydrated, giving you a soft and glowing complexion. It also helps soothe any irritation and can reduce redness. In bath bombs, cornstarch works as a binding ingredient, helping to hold everything together so that the bath bomb keeps its shape until you’re ready to use it.
Lavender oil
Lavender is amazing for both your mind and your skin! It’s well-known for relaxation, making it perfect for a calming bath. But lavender also has a lot of benefits for your skin. It can help reduce acne because it has antibacterial properties that fight off acne-causing bacteria.
Lavender is also great for wound healing. It can speed up the healing process and reduce scarring. Plus, it’s anti-inflammatory, so it can help soothe irritated or inflamed skin.
Lemon essential oil
Lemon is fantastic for your skin! Like citric acid, it’s great for exfoliating, helping to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh, smooth skin underneath. Lemon essential oil also has natural antibacterial properties, which can help keep your skin clear and free from breakouts.
It can brighten your complexion and even out skin tone, reducing the appearance of dark spots and blemishes. Plus, the refreshing scent of lemon essential oil can lift your mood and leave you feeling energized.
How To Make Lavender Lemon DIY Bath Bomb Recipe
Gather Your Ingredients
- ½ Cup Baking Soda divided (1 tsp of baking soda for mixing with essential oils)
- ¼ Cup Citric acid
- ¼ Cup Cornstarch
- 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil (you can also use 30 drops of essential oil or fragrance oils that you choose)
- 10 drops of lemon essential oil
- Water in a spray bottle
- Silicone molds, bath bomb molds, or your hands for shaping. While you can use a lot of different molds, choose ones that aren’t very detailed.
- Parchment Paper
- Mixing Bowl
- Spatula
- Measuring Cups
Making The Bath Bombs
- Take about 1 tsp of baking soda and mix it with 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops of lemon essential oil.
- Mix the baking soda and oils really well. This helps the oils blend with the other ingredients without causing a chemical reaction.
- Add the rest of the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch to the oil-infused baking soda. I had fresh lavender on hand so I added it to these bombs for extra fragrance. Rose petals or other flower petals would also be nice.
- Mix everything together really well until it’s evenly combined.
- Use a spray bottle to lightly spray the dry ingredients with water.
- Spray just enough water so the dry mixture holds together well. It should hold together like wet sand when it is the right consistency. Be careful not to add too much water, as this will cause the mixture to fizz and dissolve prematurely.
- Place the wet ingredients into silicone molds or form them into cubes or balls with your hands.
- Remember not to fill the molds completely, as the bath bomb mixture will expand.
- Allow the mixture to dry for about 30 minutes. You want it to harden enough to hold its shape but still be able to remove it from the mold.
- Remove the bath bombs from the molds and place them on a piece of parchment paper.
- Let them continue to dry for an additional hour.
- Store your bath bombs in a glass jar or another dry place where they won’t be exposed to moisture.
- Avoid storing them in sandwich bags, as they will continue to produce gas and could burst the bag. (Ask me how I know!)
- Use 2-3 cubes in your hot bath water at a time and enjoy the relaxing and skin-soothing benefits of your Lavender Lemon Bath Bombs.
How Do Bath Bombs Work?
Bath bombs work through a simple chemical reaction that occurs when they are dropped into water. The main ingredients in a bath bomb, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid act with water to produce carbon dioxide gas. Here’s a step-by-step explanation of the process:
- When you drop a bath bomb into your warm bath, the water starts to dissolve the outer layer of the bath bomb.
- As the water enters the bath bomb, it causes the baking soda and citric acid to react with each other. This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, which forms bubbles and creates the fizzing effect in your bath water.
- As the bath bomb continues to dissolve, it releases other ingredients like cornstarch, essential oils, fragrances, and colors into the water. Cornstarch helps to slow down the reaction, allowing the bath bomb to fizz and dissolve more slowly.
- The essential oils and other ingredients like dried flowers, disperse in the water.
